Late Summer Gatherings

Making the most of those golden evenings before the season begins to change

There is something about late summer that makes us want to linger.

The days are still warm, but the evenings arrive a little earlier. The garden has grown wonderfully unruly, the light turns golden before dinner, and suddenly sitting outside with people you love feels a little more precious than it did in June.

Maybe it’s because we know these evenings won’t last forever.

And that may be exactly why they’re worth celebrating.

Let the Garden Set the Table

A late-summer gathering doesn’t need much decorating. Chances are, nature has already done most of the work.

Start with what you have. A wooden table, mismatched chairs, simple dishes and cloth napkins are more than enough. Clip a few stems from the garden, gather herbs into small jars, or place a pot of rosemary right on the table.

Don’t worry about making everything match.

In fact, a table that feels collected rather than perfectly styled often feels much more inviting.

Add a Little Glow

As daylight fades, lighting completely changes the mood.

String lights overhead, lanterns tucked among plants and candles scattered across the table create that wonderful glow that makes everyone want to stay just a little longer.

Use different heights rather than lining everything up perfectly. A few candles on the table, another lantern nearby and soft lights in the trees make the whole garden feel magical without feeling overly decorated.

Keep the Food Simple

This is not the evening for spending hours in the kitchen while everyone else is outside.

Choose food that can mostly be prepared ahead.

A beautiful salad, grilled vegetables, good bread, a simple pasta, fresh fruit and something sweet are plenty. Put everything on the table and let people help themselves.

And if dinner turns into everyone sitting around talking long after the plates are empty?

Even better.

Make Everyone Comfortable

Late-summer evenings can surprise you once the sun goes down.

Keep a basket of lightweight throws nearby. Add cushions to outdoor chairs. If you have a fire pit, this is exactly the time to use it.

These little touches quietly tell your guests:

Stay awhile.

And really, isn’t that what gathering around a table is supposed to do?

Don't Wait for an Occasion

Perhaps the best late-summer gatherings are the ones that happen for no particular reason.

Invite a neighbor over. Call a friend you haven’t seen enough this summer. Set the table on a Tuesday night simply because the weather is beautiful.

We sometimes save the good dishes, the candles and the invitations for special occasions.

But an ordinary evening can become the special occasion.

Late summer reminds us that seasons change whether we're ready or not. So light the candles. Open the bottle. Bring dinner outside.

And leave another chair at the table.

There’s always room for one more. The table is set.
